About the Program
The Cardiac Monitor/Electrocardiography (EKG) Technician program prepares students with the knowledge, experience, exposure and confidence to monitor and interpret cardiac telemetry rhythms as well as perform diagnostic testing to assess heart rhythm and rate. Cardiac Monitor/Electrocardiography Technicians play an important role in the management of patients with heart disease or injury by observing, documenting, and reporting normal, abnormal and potentially life-threatening cardiac rhythms to the appropriate medical staff. Electrocardiography Technicians typically work in hospital and outpatient clinic environments while Cardiac Monitor Technicians typically work in the hospital or a centralized monitoring setting. They play a vital role in the lives of cardiac patients and are a critical member of the health care team.
This program will include fundamental information on anatomy and physiology of the heart and cardiovascular system, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical legal ethics, and communication, and intensive EKG monitor strip interpretations. Additionally, you will spend time in the lab setting working with monitoring equipment and observing in the clinical environment working with Cardiac Monitor Technicians.
Typical job duties for an EKG Technician include:
- Operate EKG machines to record the electrical activity of the heart.
- Monitor the EKG machine during the procedure to ensure the quality and consistency of the recorded signals.
- Identify and troubleshoot any technical issues with the equipment.
- Analyze EKG readings to identify abnormalities or irregularities in the heart's electrical activity.
