Testing & First Quarter Registration
Your advising team is excited to see you at the virtual and in-person Orientation, which will provide a comprehensive overview of Green River including placement tests, class registration, and a campus tour. It is very important to attend Orientation to get off to a good start on your academic journey at Green River College!
Students who have met the English Proficiency Requirement are eligible to take academic classes in the first quarter.
Your advisor will assist you with preliminary registration before your arrival. Please be sure to complete a **pre-registration form** so your advisor can learn a little about you in advance, and understand what classes interest you.
Your TOEFL or IELTS score will determine what level of English classes you will take, and what other academic classes you are qualified to register for in your first quarter. The approved placement for TOEFL or IELTS is as follows:
English 101
- TOEFL 72 (no section below 18)
- IELTS 6.5 (no section below 6.0)
English 101/117
- TOEFL 64-71 (Writing 17 or higher)
- IELTS 6.0 (Writing 5.0 or higher)
English 99/Read 104
- TOEFL 64-71 (no section below 15)
- IELTS 6.0 (no section below 5.5)
English 97
- TOEFL 61-63
- IELTS 5.5 (no section below 5.0)
Take Your Placement Tests
New Green River College students take two placement tests: the College Success Reading Assessment* and the WAMAP math test. You can take these tests online from your home. It is important to complete both tests as soon as possible because you cannot register for classes until you have completed the tests.
* Please note that if you have a TOEFL score of 72 or higher with no section below 18 OR an IELTS score of 6.5 with no section below 6.0, then you qualify for our highest English class and do not need to take the College Success test.
Testing is a multi-step process, and many new students have questions about it. We are happy to help, so please feel free to chat live with our Advisors or email us your question at ipadvising@greenriver.edu. You can retake the tests multiple times, and only your highest score is recorded. Your scores on these tests do not impact your grades.
