Course Descriptions
All students must take one Spanish language class and two additional courses, for a total of 15 credits.
Spanish language - All levels available (5 credits)
Students will take a placement test and be placed in the appropriate level (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced). Instructors will combine different methods of communicative language teaching to reach every type of student. The main aim is to teach the students all skills and concepts needed to feel comfortable in a Spanish-speaking atmosphere, and increase confidence in order to encourage more direct contact with native speakers, leading to a better understanding of the culture.
PSYC& 100 - General Psycology (5 credits)
This course examines the roots, impact, and social dynamics of racial prejudice, with a focus on Spain’s complex history and diverse cultural landscape. Through lectures, readings, and discussions, students will explore psychological theories that explain racial prejudice, how it manifests in social institutions, and how it can evolve. Topics include concepts like "optimal distinctiveness" and "categorization-competition" to understand how identities—such as Spanish, Catalan, and European—affect group dynamics and perceptions. No prior psychology background is required.
PSYC& 245 - Social Psycology (5 credits)
This course explores how social settings—such as groups, culture, and context—shape individual behavior, focusing on social identity, conformity, competition, and perception. Students will examine topics including self-concept, social cognition, aggression, and prejudice through research on race, gender, and other social identities. Using Catalonia's unique cultural context, students will analyze how identity as Catalan, European, and Spanish influences social dynamics and perceptions. Activities will include applying social psychological principles through local interactions, with no prior psychology knowledge required.
