I embarked on my academic journey at the Civil Aviation Flight University of China (CAFUC) in September 2019, where I pursued a degree in Air Traffic Operation. Recognizing the value of an international education and the need to further develop my academic and professional skills, I joined Green River College (GRC) in March 2022 through its sister program, completing an Associate Degree in Aviation Technology with a specialization in airline dispatch in March 2023.
How Green River College prepared me to transfer to a top graduate school
During my time at Green River College, I actively engaged in a wide range of English courses that played a pivotal role in refining my language proficiency. These courses, combined with immersive learning experiences, significantly enhanced my academic writing, public speaking, and professional communication skills. The diverse classroom environment at GRC further strengthened my ability to collaborate effectively in English-speaking settings, preparing me for the rigorous demands of higher education in the United States.
Beyond academics, I developed strong leadership skills by serving as the president of the Tea Club at Green River College. In this role, I organized cultural exchange events, led club initiatives, and fostered an inclusive community for students from diverse backgrounds. This leadership experience honed my ability to manage teams, plan strategic activities, and communicate effectively—skills that later proved invaluable in my graduate studies and professional endeavors.
Additionally, the structured coursework at GRC helped me cultivate a disciplined approach to studying. Under the guidance of esteemed instructors such as George Comollo, Tad Henry, and Frank, I completed FAA-certified courses that required precision, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of aviation principles. These experiences solidified my technical foundation and instilled a strong sense of academic discipline, which contributed to my outstanding performance in my subsequent studies.
The support I received from GRC’s dedicated student advisors, including Kerry Kwon, JingZhu” Jude” Guo, and other amazing advisors, was instrumental in my success. As an international student, navigating academic and administrative processes in a foreign country can be challenging, but their invaluable assistance made my transition smooth. They provided guidance on course selection, academic planning, and career development, ensuring that I maximized my opportunities at GRC and beyond. Their encouragement and mentorship gave me the confidence to pursue my academic and professional goals with determination.
Dr. Wendy Stewart, Vice President of Green River College, also recognized my dedication and potential, providing me with a strong recommendation letter that supported my application to Purdue University. This endorsement, along with the academic rigor, leadership opportunities, and unwavering support from faculty and advisors at GRC, enabled me to transition seamlessly into Purdue’s Master’s program in Aviation Economics and Finance in August 2023. My commitment to academic excellence was reflected in my perfect GPA during the program, which ultimately led to my acceptance into Purdue University's prestigious PhD program in Aviation Technology and Management with full funding.
My journey from Green River College to Purdue University is a testament to the profound impact of GRC’s academic rigor, leadership opportunities, and the incredible support network of faculty, advisors, and mentors. The experiences and skills I gained at GRC played a crucial role in shaping my educational and professional trajectory, equipping me with the mindset and expertise needed to excel in the highly specialized field of aviation.
