Frequently Asked Questions

I want to host international students. How can I qualify?

To qualify as a host, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Location:
    • Hosts for students age 17+ must live within 60 minutes of campus by bus, with no more than one transfer.
    • Hosts for 16-year-old students must live within 30 minutes by bus, with no transfers.
    • If you live outside these limits, you must provide transportation to campus or to a safe bus stop that meets the timing requirement.
  • Student Accomodations:
    •  A dedicated bed, desk, chair, lamp, and clothing storage are required for each student, even when sharing a room.
  • Meals:
    • Hosts must provide food for three meals per day.
    • Students make their own breakfast and lunch.
    • Dinner should be prepared by the host and eaten together as often as possible.
  • Language:
    • English does not need to be your first language, but you must commit to speaking only English with the students.
  • Host Residency:
    • The host must live in the home full-time.
  • Mindset:
    • Hosting is about cultural exchange, not rental income. Please do not rely on this as a primary source of income, as placements are not guaranteed.
  • *Note: All questions will be answered, and applications made available at orientation.

How much does the student pay?

Age Group Room Type Monthly Payment
16-year-olds Single Room $1,100
16-year-olds Shared Room $1,000
17+ year old Single Room $1,000
17+ year old Shared Room $900

How do students pay hosts?

Students pay their host families directly, either by cash or cash apps such as Zelle.

What if my student says they already paid the school?

Believe them! Contact us to verify, then send the student to our office. If eligible, they will receive an email when their refund check is ready for pickup at the IP (International Programs) office.

What is a Welcome Navigator, and how do I get the $100 payment?

Welcome Navigators help students living in campus housing (not homestay) settle in. You’ll show students how to:

  • Open a bank account
  • Set up local phone service
  • Get familiar with the area

You can usually assist multiple students at once. You do not need to go to the airport, unlike the old "Greeter" role. To receive your $100 per student, submit the following:

  • Client Services Agreement
  • W-9 form
  • Welcome Navigator Invoice (signed by student)

When is the Welcome Navigator paperwork due?

All paperwork must be submitted within two weeks of the student’s arrival.

Can I charge students extra for anything?

No. You may not charge for any additional services, meals, or transportation.

What if my student wants a friend to move in?

Contact the Housing Office. No student may move in without prior approval.

Where can I take my student for banking needs?

We recommend these branches in Auburn:

  • Bank of America (the only bank that allows 16-year-olds to open an account without a co-signer)
  • Wells Fargo
  • Chase

*Please call ahead to make an appointment. These banks offer checking accounts with debit cards for students under 18.

What if my student is sick or injured?

Take them to a MultiCare clinic. Bring:

  • Student’s medical release form
  • Photo ID
  • Sign only the form that confirms your role in providing consent for treatment. Do not sign any form that makes you financially responsible.

For questions, email or visit the International Programs office. In an emergency, call 911 first—then call the emergency line.

What if my student needs dental or vision care?

Email our business office at international@greenriver.edu to inquire about adding dental or vision coverage to their insurance.

Who do I call in an emergency?

Call the Director of Housing at 253-740-8422 after you have contacted 911, if needed.
