About American Ethnic Studies
American Ethnic Studies (AMES) is a multidisciplinary field that investigates ethnic and racial experiences in the United States. Rooted in the exploration of histories, cultures, and identities of predominantly Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, American Ethnic Studies provides a critical lens through which to analyze the complex dynamics of power, privilege, and systems of oppression.
AMES studies and critiques traditional academic boundaries, drawing scholarships from history, sociology, literature, anthropology, and more to critically examine Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color's contributions and histories in the United States. By centering the voices often silenced by the mainstream narrative, American Ethnic Studies cultivates a deeper understanding of the intricate connections between social justice, identity formation, intersectionality, and the pursuit of equity in our diverse society.
