About the Program

This certificate meets the training requirements to apply for the Washington State Department of Health Medical Assistant Phlebotomy certificate. This certificate provides basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, ethical, legal and regulatory issues, safety measures, infection control, special collections, how to avoid errors to becoming successful in collection and transfer of blood specimens in our current industry. Skills and techniques acquired in this certificate are veni and capillary blood collections, EKG and vital signs. BLS and HIV/AIDS certificates are acquired.

The Phlebotomy program runs quarterly. Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served bases. 

Application Deadlines: September 1st (Fall), December 1st (Winter), March 1st (Spring), and June 1st (Summer)

Eligbility Requirements

  1. Apply to Green River College: Getting Started. Once an application is submitted, a ctcLink identification (ID) number will be issued through the email the applicant applied with.
  2. Must be 18 Years of age or older prior to graduation date and licensure
  3. You must also submit the phlebotomy online application to be considered for the phlebotomy program.
  4. Students must score 61 or higher on the College Success Assessment to be placed at Transitional Students Level 3 (TS Level 3).
    • If placed in TS Level 3, students are required to join the I-BEST program.
    • Placement testing must be done through the College's Placement & Testing Center.
    • Directed Self Placement cannot be used for placement.

 

Job Duties

Typical job duties for a phlebotomist include:

  • Greeting patients and explaining the blood drawing process to them.
  • Performing venipuncture, which involves locating and accessing a patient's vein with a needle to draw blood.
  • Using proper techniques to ensure a successful and relatively painless blood draw.
  • Collecting blood specimens in appropriate containers, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation.
  • Adhering to infection control protocols to prevent the spread of infections.
  • Maintaining and sterilizing phlebotomy equipment, including needles, tubes, and other tools.
  • Following established protocols and guidelines to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
