SUSI 2016

Nigina Begmatova, Takhmina Shamsudinzoda and Zarrina Aminova implemented a two-day workshop in the capital city of Dushanbe called "Women's Voice." The goal of the project was to raise awareness about women's issues in Tajikistan and to empower their peers to overcome these challenges. Each alumna took the lead for different themes, focusing on gender and sex trafficking, marriage and divorce, domestic violence, child labor and migration. A guest speaker from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) helped participants debate the positive and negative impacts of migration on women and the SUSI alumnae facilitated activities to help participants brainstorm solutions. Then, they invited two American guest speakers to compare and contrast the issues women face in the United States with those in Tajikistan. Participants had multiple opportunities to reflect, share and prepare to advocate for themselves and other women in the future. Having successfully completed their project, Nigina, Takhmina and Zarrina are planning to apply for a grant to extend the program to rural villages where the need for women's empowerment is greatest.
